BEFORE ADOPTING

Before getting rats, it is very important to make sure your'e prepared and have done your homework. Here is a checklist to look through if you are considering getting yourself some lovely rats.

DOES YOUR LANDLORD ALLOW PETS?

You should ALWAYS have premission to have animals. It is not fair to bring in animals to your home and rehome them because your landlord caught you with animals you are not allowed to have. If your landlord does not allowe animals, it is always worth emailing or calling them and ask them how they feel about caged animals. If they tell you no, please respect this for your, your landlords and your potential pets sake.

DO YOU LIVE WITH PARENTS OR FLAT MATES?

Make sure everyone in your house hold is okay with you bringing in animals. As you share a roof, you should respect each other and not bring an animal in if its not something everyone is comfortable with.

If your parents are NOT okay with having rats at the moment, and you are a minor and rely on them financially and for transport. Please respect this decision. Rats are a big financial responsibility and it is important that the main financial provider for the animals is 1000% on board and is aware of the cost of housing, food, toys, vet care, etc.

IS THIS AN IMPULSE DECIDION?

Have you given this enough consideration and not just decided that you want rats last night? Owning any animal is a big responsibility and should not be something you decide to do on the fly. Make sure you have read through our Rat 101 section.

CAN YOU AFFORD RATS?

Rats will need food, toys, a nice cage and eventually will go see a vet. Make sure you are financially in a situation where you can comfortably afford pets. If you are a minor or rely on someone for financial aid, please discuss the matter with who ever your money comes from and make sure they agree to fund your pets.

HAVE YOU SET UP A CAGE?

You should always have your enclosure set up before you buy animals. Too often you see people impulse buying animals and getting them the first cage they find after the animal is already in their care. This is unacceptable and a fast lane to neglect. Prepare for your animal before you get them.

WILL YOU BE OKAY?

Things in life can happen, big scary things. We can get physically hurt, mentally hurt. These factors can make a huge change in how we can care for our pets. Make sure you are mentally and physically in a place where having animals won't make things worse for you, or you wont be able to care for the animals properly. It can be tempting to get an animal companion when you feel like the world is against you, but make sure you are in a place where you can care for you and your animals.
